When looking for a backpack for daily commutes to the office or university, or for city trips, design is usually the first thing people consider. But the most important decision for durability and functionality comes down to the material. We put the most common backpack materials to a practical test. It's particularly worth taking a closer look at synthetic fabrics, as nylon and polyester are often lumped together – unfairly so.

Which fabric truly withstands urban everyday life?

The Test Candidates in Urban Everyday Life

1. Canvas (Cotton): The classic for a heritage look. Canvas is extremely tear-resistant, but it has one major drawback in our test: Without a thick wax layer, it soaks up water like a sponge in the rain. Additionally, the color fades over time. It's rather unsuitable for rainy days and delicate electronics in a laptop backpack.

2. Genuine Leather: Aesthetically elegant, but requires extensive care. Leather is heavy, susceptible to scratches, and reacts sensitively to moisture. For a modern, uncomplicated lifestyle, it's often too inflexible and highly controversial environmentally due to the tanning process.

3. Nylon (Polyamide): The king of the outdoor industry. Nylon is extremely tear and abrasion-resistant, and highly elastic. However, practical tests show weaknesses in urban everyday life: When nylon gets really wet, the fibers absorb moisture. The backpack stretches slightly and temporarily loses its shape. Furthermore, nylon often has a slight sheen that quickly looks more like "mountaineering" than a business meeting.

4. Standard Polyester: The dimensionally stable all-rounder. Unlike nylon, polyester absorbs hardly any moisture, dries extremely quickly, and always stays perfectly in shape – even when the backpack is packed full. It also significantly outperforms nylon in terms of UV resistance, as it doesn't fade or become brittle in the sun. The only catch with standard polyester: It's usually newly produced as "Virgin Plastic" directly from crude oil.

5. rPET (Recycled Polyester): The modern tech alternative. Made from 100% recycled PET bottles, this material combines the functional dimensional stability and UV resistance of polyester with a matte, elegant texture. In practical tests, it excels across the board: It's lightweight, durable, completely water-repellent, and breaks away from the shiny plastic look of conventional synthetics.
